Neco Williams to Tottenham: Everything Ange Postecoglou said as whispers intensify
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an enquiry about a move for Nottingham Forest right-back Neco Williams this summer.
Newcastle United are among several Premier League sides interested in the 25-year-old, who enjoyed a brilliant season.
The left-back made 53 appearances across all competitions for the Tricky Trees and was named the club's 2025-26 player of the season.
Williams is under contract until 2029 but is yet to sign an extension, with Nottingham Forest having been keen to tie him down.
Tottenham's interest may indicate a potential departure for Djed Spence this summer, with Everton hoping to spend around £25million to sign him.
The defender was impressive for England off the bench as they beat Norway 2-1 in extra-time to reach the World Cup semi-final.
Ange Postecoglou praised Neco Williams
The less said about Ange Postecoglou's time at Nottingham Forest, the better.
The Australian was coming off a harsh sacking at Tottenham, and hoped to revitalise his Premier League career by turning round the situation at the City Ground.
But the now Al-Nassr manager was in charge for eight games and just over a month, marking one of the shortest tenures in Premier League history.
Postecoglou did not guide his team to a single win, losing six of the eight games and earning just two points.
A point on the road to Burnley in his third game may have been a turning point, had it been backed up by any positive Premier League results afterwards.
Williams opened the scoring that day, finding the net in just the second minute with a thunderous strike.
"Great strike. He's been unlucky with one in the second half as well. We want our full-backs to join in with those sort of situations as well," Postecoglou said after the game.
"We still have areas of improvement but we responded well in the second half. We created a lot of chances. It wasn't just individuals, it was combinations and if we keep doing that then eventually a goalkeeper will throw one in for us."
The stats that explain Newcastle's Williams interest
Despite playing for a team that came close to relegation, Williams caught the eye on regular occasion.
The defender gets plenty of shots away - 1.29 per game - and creates a chance every game.
But while the 25-year-old is well known for his offensive ability, his defending is very impressive, too.
Williams makes 2.47 clearances, 1.32 interceptions, 2.69 tackles, 4.60 recoveries and wins 6.06 duels per game.
Should Tottenham be able to attract him for a reasonable price this summer, they will be gaining a top full-back.
