Nottingham Forest have been boosted in their pursuit of Youssouf Fofana as new AC Milan boss Ruben Amorim has left him out of his plans for this season, sources have told Football Insider.

Amorim has a lot to prove as he takes over the San Siro club for the coming campaign in his first job since being sacked by Man United in January.

Many believed Fofana would be key to his plans after making 88 appearances for the club in the last two seasons.

The Frenchman has emerged onto Forest's radar this summer, with Crystal Palace also among the clubs keen on his services.

A deal to take him to the Premier League looks possible, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, with Amorim content to see him move on before the close of the window.

The 27-year-old is not part of Milan's new project and can leave the club with two years left on his contract this summer.

Fofana has a wealth of experience at the top level after spending four-and-a-half years at Monaco prior to joining Milan.

Oliver Glasner is keen on his services as he looks to further bolster his midfield options to offset the loss of Elliot Anderson to Man City.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “This is an opportunity that has arrived for Forest here to get Fofana, because it does appear that Milan are open to letting the French midfielder leave, and I don't think it'd be a huge transfer fee for him either.

“The new Milan boss, Ruben Amorim, has given his list of players who are basically surplus to requirements at the San Siro, and surprisingly, Fofana is one of them."

Nottingham Forest's chances of signing Jean-Philippe Mateta revealed amid 'shift in attitude'

Jean-Philippe Mateta to Forest update amid Glasner reunion talk

Forest are not only battling Palace to sign another player, but they are also keen on bringing in one of their stars after Glasner switched Selhurst Park for the City Ground.

French striker Mateta has emerged as an option for the Reds after being heavily linked away from the South London club in January.

Despite talk of a potential reunion with Glasner being on the cards, sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Forest will not make another offer for Mateta in the last weeks of this window.

They saw a £35million bid for his services rejected just after the turn of the year but have now moved onto other targets.
