Oliver Glasner to make James McAtee transfer decision after Crystal Palace reveal - O'Rourke

Oliver Glasner is reluctant to see James McAtee leave Nottingham Forest before testing him in pre-season, sources have told Football Insider.

The 23-year-old endured a frustrating first season at the City Ground after making a £30million move from Man City last summer, as he started just two Premier League games.

However, the arrival of a new manager is set to inspire a fresh start for the midfielder, with Glasner set to assess his squad before making decisions about any departures.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, McAtee will be given a chance to prove himself at the City Ground, in a blow to his suitors' plans.

This comes as a number of clubs are believed to have been keeping tabs on his situation, having missed out when he joined Forest last summer, and could reignite their interest.

However, with Glasner planning to assess McAtee in pre-season, any decision over his future is unlikely to be made until closer to the end of the window.

What does Oliver Glasner think of James McAtee?

Football Insider reported last summer that Crystal Palace were plotting a move to sign McAtee as they prepared for Eberechi Eze to leave the club, and he eventaully joined Arsenal.

Glasner is believed to have been a big admirer of the midfielder and was playing a key role in their pursuit, and now he will be given the chance to link up with him at Forest.

While a deal will not be completely ruled out, and could take place later in the window, the new manager is keen to assess his level before accepting any offers.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Oliver Glasner will be looking to cast an eye over him once he gets into Nottingham Forest.

"He will want to have time to assess his squad when they return for pre-season before he makes any decisions about players' futures.

"it looks a real difficult deal to do and I think Forest aren't actively pushing him out the door. I think they'll probably want to keep him around unless there's a big offer for him."

Football Insider transfer correspondent Callum O'Connell then followed up: "It’s an interesting one, a good point with Oliver Glasner going in there at Forest as well.

"Because I know that McAtee was somebody that he and Palace admired and potentially looked to bring in before that move to Forest. He will definitely play a role in whether he moves on."

Could Nottingham Forest accept new offers for McAtee?

Speculation surrounding McAtee's future at Nottingham Forest has grown after what proved to be a frustrating season for him since his move to the City Ground.

Despite being tipped for big things while at Man City, he has so far failed to make an impact at Forest, and could now look for a fresh start elsewhere.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in March that Nottingham Forest could accept offers for McAtee as they may be tempted to cut their losses.

A number of Bundesliga and Ligue 1 clubs were interested before his move to the City Ground, and that interest could return should he be made available.

However, Forest won't be able to demand the same high fee they paid for him one year ago, and may be forced to accept a cut-price offer if they want to let him go.
