Aston Villa have had an offer accepted for Brentford striker Scott Hogan, according to a reliable journalist.

Dean Jones from Bleacher Report dropped the news on his personal Twitter account on Monday evening.

He has said that it’s not clear whether Aston Villa will land the Brentford player or not, as he was keen on a Premier League move, but it’s a major development on a long-running transfer saga.

This comes after Telegraph correspondent Jason Birt claimed on his personal Twitter account that Villa, along with Crystal Palace, West Brom and West Ham were interested in the £15million-rated forward.

West Ham have been linked with the player throughout the transfer window, but appeared to be balking at the £15million valuation.

Sky Sports reported on their transfer centre blog (Saturday, 9.26am) that Brentford might have been willing to drop the price, but the Hammers are still to make another move and now face fierce competition.

Hogan has scored 14 goals in 25 Championship games this season for Dean Smith’s side and featured for the London-based club during their 4-0 FA Cup loss at Chelsea at the weekend.

Villa manager Steve Bruce has three strikers to choose from in Jonathan Kodjia, Gabby Agbonlahor and Ross McCormack, but the latter has been demoted because of his fitness.

Football Insider verdict:

It is not quite time for Villa fans to hoist the flags and unfurl the bunting. But news of a bid accepted for Hogan is definitely worth a quiet thumbs-up from supporters. None of Villa’s many strikers can match the Brentford man’s goals record this season, and it is proof of his calibre and potential that there is a late-window race for his signature. £15million is a massive sum, but Bruce has freed up space in his squad by selling Jordan Ayew and Hogan should certainly given Championship defences more of an examination that the hit-and-miss Ghanian.
