Odds tumble on Rangers signing top-flight midfielder

By Richard Parks

The odds have been slashed on Rangers signing Hibernian midfield kingpin John McGinn in the January transfer window.

Bet Victor priced the Scottish giants as 5/2 favourites on Tuesday morning to land the central midfielder, 22, when the window re-opens.

Rangers have leaped ahead of with bitter rivals Celtic in the race for McGinn’s signature, with the duo ahead of Newcastle United and four English Championship clubs, Hull City, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Norwich City (all 10/1).

Rangers were priced 8/1 to land McGinn last month, when they were the same price as their fellow Glasgow giants.

McGinn spearheaded Hibernian’s return to the Scottish Premiership with his outstanding displays last season, in which he scored five goals and 10 assists from 37 matches during their romp to the Championship title.

He has also made an impressive start in the top flight for Neil Lennon’s side and memorably put Celtic to the sword with two goals in their 2-2 draw at Parkhead earlier this month.

The performances of the three-times Scotland international have also attracted covetous glances from south of the border.

Glasgow-born McGinn joined Hibs from St Mirren in the summer of 2015 and signed a four-year contract that expires in the summer of 2019.
