Oleksandr Zinchenko: Arsenal have edge over West Ham in midfielder chase - pundit

Kevin Campbell has told Arsenal to beat off interest from West Ham and sign versatile Man City star Oleksandr Zinchenko this summer.

The former Gunners striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 25-year-old’s path to first-team football would be clearer at the Emirates Stadium due to “depleted” numbers in midfield.

According to the London Evening Standard (6 June), Arsenal and West Ham have both expressed an interest in signing Zinchenko – with Man City unlikely to stand in the way of a potential move.

The Gunners are reportedly willing to give the Ukraine international more opportunity to play in his preferred midfield role.

Zinchenko primarily operates at left-back for Man City but often stars in a central midfield role for his country.

He made 28 appearances in the 2021-22 season, assisting five times as Pep Guardiola’s side lifted the Premier League.

Campbell suggested Zinchenko’s route to first-team football is a lot less clear at West Ham.

“Fornals has been good for West Ham, Soucek and Rice have been good,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“Could I see Zinchenko in midfield for West Ham? I could, but I don’t know who’s going to make way.

“Obviously there is other interest – including from Arsenal. I could see him in that Arsenal midfield straight away.

“He’s a good operator. He’s tidy on the ball – a typical Man City player. He can take the ball in tight areas and he knows how to manipulate it.

“At West Ham maybe he would be battling a few players in order to get into the side. At Arsenal – they are fairly depleted in that midfield area.

“I think he could go in there and do a good job for Arteta.”
