Noel Whelan claims that Reading midfielder John Swift could be a bargain signing for Leeds United this summer.
The former Whites striker and lifelong fan at Elland Road, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggests the “standout” Royals star could be a value-for-money capture.
As revealed by Football Insider, Leeds have set their sights on signing the 25-year-old playmaker, with Reading expected to slash their original £7million asking price.
However, the Whites face competition from Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United, with the Blades having formally tabled a £3million-plus bid for his signature.
Whelan admits he has doubts over whether the former England under-21 international will be a game-changer in the Premier League but suggests he could be a decent addition to the squad.
Whelan told Football Insider: “A player that’s at a club in the safe zone in the Championship, he’s been a standout player for Reading, quite frankly.
“At less than £7million, it’s not a lot of money these days to be asking for a player at 25-years-of-age who is probably one of the best players in that side, without a shadow of a doubt.
“The question is can he handle it in the Premier League? Do we need to be looking for players with a little bit more quality. I dare to say we do.
“I don’t think anybody would grumble with that signing at Leeds United as a fan but I think if you went into the Premier League, you would question whether he’s capable of being the difference to keep us up.”
Swift has been a creative influence for Reading this season, with 10 assists and five goals under his belt in the league.
The former Chelsea youngster has built up a reputation as a consistent Championship performer, with 157 second-tier appearances under his belt to date.
