O'Nien 'is off' if Sunderland blow promotion - Phillips
Kevin Phillips claims Luke O’Nien will leave Sunderland next summer if the club doesn’t achieve promotion this season.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the club must deliver to keep the player happy.
On 6th July, Sunderland announced O’Nien has signed a three new deal at the Stadium of Light.
His previous deal expired at the end of the season but unlike Charlie Wyke, O’Nien accepted his new terms.
Speaking after signing, O’Nien admitted “my head said Championship” before he agreed new terms with the Black Cats.
He made 40 appearances in League One last season as Sunderland once again failed to get promoted.

Phillips claims O’Nien has all but confirmed he will leave next summer unless the Black Cats get promoted this season.
“When a player comes out and says that, he’s saying if we don’t go up next season, I’m off,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“If he has another good season like he did last year, there will be interest.
“It won’t be heart over head next season if we don’t go up.
“Credit to the player, he will give his all next season and he is a good signing for Sunderland.
“Let’s just hope they can deliver for the player so he stays at the club beyond next summer.”
O’Nien joined Sunderland in 2018 after leaving Wycombe Wanderers following three years with the club.
He has made 140 appearances for the Black Cats and scored 11 goals during his time on Wearside.
