James Rodriguez arrived at Everton on a reduced salary and Carlo Ancelotti may be able to recruit other superstars on-the-cheap too.
That is the prediction of ex-England striker Darren Bent, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams after the Toffees were linked with moves for both Isco and Sami Khedira.
Juventus’s Khedira and Real Madrid’s Isco would both command huge salaries unless Ancelotti could once again work his budgetary magic.
Speculating whether the Italian manager would be able to persuade the pair to take wage cuts alongside James, Bent said if anyone could it would be the three-time Champions League-winning manager.
“Only Ancelotti would be able to do that. If we are talking about players taking pay cuts than that reflects really well on him,” he told Football Insider.
“Everton’s a massive football club, you can’t say it isn’t. If players are prepared to take wage cuts to get themselves there and work with Ancelotti, then that is superb from his perspective.
“The fact that the players are still hungry enough to do that is a really, really good sign for them.
“It’s a positive for Everton that these players are being linked with the club anyway.”
Everton recently announced annual losses of £139.9million and so will surely be looking to tighten the purse strings over the next year.
Plans for a new stadium are also in place, meaning the financial future of the club has never been more important.
