England fans have reacted with anger and frustration on Twitter after it was revealed Harry Kane has been released from the squad ahead of the international friendly against Spain.

Kane was on the bench for England’s World Cup qualifier against Scotland on Friday night but will not play another game for his country in 2016.

The striker was absent for two months after picking up ankle ligament damage during Tottenham’s 1-0 victory against Sunderland but returned to the side against Arsenal last Sunday.

The FA’s official website revealed it was a pre-match agreement for Kane to return to White Hart Lane following the clash against Scotland and many fans are unhappy at his initial inclusion in the squad.

Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney were all selected ahead of Charlie Austin and Jermain Defoe who have been in bright form so far this season for their Premier League clubs.

Defoe has netted six goals in 11 league appearances for Sunderland while Austin has scored five in 10 games, which is two more than the total scored by the five strikers Gareth Southgate selected.

News of Kane’s return therefore has sent Twitter into a frenzy, with many fans voicing their frustration at Southgate’s decision to select the Tottenham man despite featuring just once in the last two months.
