'Outstanding'- Exclusive: Hutton Wowed by first glimpse of Rangers talent

Alan Hutton heaped praise on new Rangers signing Leon Balogun after the defender impressed during his new side’s victory over Aberdeen on Saturday.

The former Rangers defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, described the Nigerian international’s performance as “outstanding.”

Balogun was picked up on a free after his contract at Wigan Athletic expired in July and slotted seamlessly into Steven Gerrard’s side.

Hutton believes the 32-year-old has already formed a fruitful partnership with Connor Goldson at the heart of Rangers’ defence.

“I thought he was excellent,” Hutton told Football Insider

“To come in after just signing, probably not knowing his teammates that well and put in a performance like that was outstanding.

“He came out with the ball and looked comfortable, every time he was asked to defend he did and I think Stevie Gerrard will be over the moon with his performance.

“It’s difficult to come into a team, especially a Rangers team with high pressure and put in a performance like that is really good.

“It looks like him and Connor Goldson have got a good partnership already and they’ve only played one game.”

The Nigeria international was signed following a long-term injury setback for Nikola Katic with the 23-year-old sidelined for up to nine months with an ACL problem.

Next up for Steven Gerrard’s men is a trip to face German giants Bayer Leverkusen in the second leg of their Europa League last 16 clash.

The Gers go into the tie trailing 3-1 and it would take a mammoth effort for the Ibrox club to make it through to the last eight.

Rangers will be without Balogun for the clash, with the new signing ineligible to feature due to UEFA squad registration rules.
