Liverpool in driving seat - BBC journalist posts massive transfer update on Twitter

By Harry Sykes

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has rejected a move to Chelsea because he wants to join Liverpool instead, according to a reliable journalist.

BBC Sport correspondent David Ornstein reported on his personal Twitter account in the early hours of Wednesday that the Arsenal midfielder has has heart set on Anfield.

Ornstein explained that Liverpool’s bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain is lower than that of Chelsea, as Arsenal hold out for a £40million valuation.

The Gunners will refuse to sell the England international, 24, by Thursday night’s deadline if their price tag is not met by Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side are now in the driving seat in the race to sign him.

Ornstein revealed that Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to quit Arsenal because he wants to play centrally rather than the right wing-back position in which he has been used in the new season and at the end of 2016-17.

At Chelsea, the player is convinced he would be in the running to compete with Victor Moses for the right flank role rather than the more advanced central position he feels better reflects his talents.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been insistent that he wanted to keep the midfielder and described his player as the future of the club as recently as Friday.

But it has been widely reported that the club’s stance has changed in the wake of their humiliating defeat at 4-0 at Anfield on Sunday and are now willing to let him go.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has snubbed a number of contract offers from the north Londoners as he looks to take advantage of his contract situation, which would allow him to leave on a free next summer or quit for a relatively cut-price fee.

Football Insider verdict:

This is shaping up to be quite a transfer battle. Oxlade-Chamberlain did not play like a £40million bargain in Arsenal’s wretched display at Anfield on Sunday, but it is easy to see why the two Premier League big guns want him. Versatile, mobile, technically excellent, English and with his best years ahead of him, he offers so much. The question is, where is his best position? Intriguingly, the BBC report Liverpool plan to plan him in his favourite central or advanced role. At Chelsea, he might have to compete with Victor Moses for a go at right wing-back.
