Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has destroyed Chris Wood for taking the decision to omit himself from the Leeds squad to play Sunderland on Saturday night.
There has been intense speculation around the striker’s time at Elland Road drawing to a close with the Mirror reporting that an agreement has been reached with Burnley for a £15million transfer to Turf Moor.
That has led Wood, 25, to release a statement on Twitter ahead of his side’s trip to the Stadium of Light on Saturday which explained that he didn’t feel as though he would be able to play with a move to the Premier League in the offing.
Ince, 49, has since torn into the former Leicester and West Brom striker, saying that there’s no need for him to be excluding himself from the squad with the transfer speculation surrounding him.
“Total rubbish,” said Ince about Wood’s statement, as shown in a video on BT Sport Score’s official Twitter account on Saturday.
“If I knew I was leaving the club that’s looked after me for the past couple of years and I was their top goal scorer, I’d want to play knowing that I was going to the Premier League in two weeks’ time.
“There was a lot of speculation about me going to Manchester United, but I didn’t know whether the deal was going to go through or not.
“But until the deal did go through, I always wanted to play for West Ham.
“I don’t understand these players who are not in the right frame of mind. What is wrong with these people?”

Wood is seen as a pivotal player to Leeds’ chances of getting anywhere near to promotion this season.
He scored 30 goals across all competitions and was the leading scorer in the Championship thanks to his 27 strikes in the English second-tier.
The Kiwi striker opened his account in the first match of this season against Bolton, but has failed to score in his two appearances since.
In other Leeds news, Trevor Sinclair has also ripped into Wood for his statement.
