Paul McGrath urged Aston Villa owner Tony Xia to “believe in the squad” as the January transfer window opens.

Steve Bruce’s side were beaten 1-0 at Cardiff on Monday afternoon as the promotion expert will be looking to add quality to his squad during the transfer window.

As a result of that defeat in Wales, Villa are now seven points adrift of the final play-off spot after playing 25 games in the season.

Club legend McGrath posted this message on his personal Twitter account to owner Xia in regards to the playing squad.

This was Xia’s response:

Reports in the media suggest that striker Rudy Gestede is set for a move to Premier League side Middlesbrough.

Furthermore, Villa are set to be even shorter on numbers up top as attacking duo Jonathan Kodjia and Jordan Ayew are set to represent their respective countries in the Africa Cup of Nations which starts on January 14.

The defeat against Neil Warnock’s side was the third loss for Bruce since his arrival in mid-October, on the other two occasions, they were beaten at Leeds and Norwich.

During the Championship campaign overall, Villa have won eight of their 25 games, drawing a league-high of 11 and losing six.

They will be looking to bounce back from this damaging defeat when they take on Midlands rivals Wolves and former manager Paul Lambert on January 14 in their next Championship game.

In other Aston Villa news, supporters on Twitter urge manager Steve Bruce to sign this player as a deal is reportedly close to completion.
