Paul Merson: Why I fear for West Ham against Liverpool this weekend

By Alex Stevens

Paul Merson has revealed his fears that West Ham could get blown away by Liverpool this weekend.

The Sky Sports pundit claimed Slaven Bilic’s side were “terrible” for the final 20 minutes of their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of his former club Arsenal last weekend.

Merson is convinced the struggling east London club could be on the end of another hammering on Sunday, when they travel to Anfield to face the Premier League’s top scorers.

He predicted a 3-0 win for Liverpool but explained why it could end up being even worse for the visiting club.

“The last 20 minutes against Arsenal was just terrible and I fear for West Ham,” Merson told the Sky Sports website. “Another 10 minutes and it could have been eight.

“They are shipping goals left, right and centre and could be in real trouble this weekend if Liverpool get on a roll.

“I can’t see anything other than a comfortable home win, and I’m actually being kind to the Hammers with my prediction. It could be much worse.”

Liverpool let slip a 3-1 lead against Bournemouth last Sunday to lose 4-3 in a remarkable match, but are third in the league and have only lost twice from 14 matches all season.

Jurgen Klopp’s entertainers are the top scorers in the Premier League, with 35 goals and an in-form attack even without injured talisman Philippe Coutinho.

The likes of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and fit-again Adam Lallana have all been in outstanding form this season and have contributed to a front line that is difficult to contain.

By contrast, West Ham are 17th in the league and have accumulated 12 points from their 14 matches.

Moreover, only bottom club Swansea have shipped more than the 29 goals conceded by Bilic’s struggling outfit.

In other Liverpool news, the club have scouted a priority January signing every match for two months.
