Paul Merson predicts Everton v Chelsea, makes big claim about Tottenham

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson has backed Chelsea to beat Everton 2-1 in their Premier League clash at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Sky Sports pundit made a big claim by stating that Tottenham “were the better side” during their 4-2 FA Cup defeat at the hands of Chelsea last Saturday.

Since then, both teams have picked up valuable points in the race for the Premier League title, with the leaders beating Southampton and Spurs seeing off Crystal Palace.

Antonio Conte’s team will kick off before Tottenham at the weekend as they have the chance to open up a seven-point lead on their rivals.

Merson offered his thoughts on their tough fixture against Everton, who have lost on only one occasion in front of their own supporters this term.

“Tottenham were the better side in the FA Cup semi-final but Chelsea were so clinical,” Merson told Sky Sports. “They have scored four goals in consecutive games, beating a very good side in Spurs and a good one in Southampton.

“Everton are a weird team. They get to a certain stage, you think they’re set to kick on for a top four or top five places, and they just melt away.

“They have not taken that next step and I worry for them. It will be a competitive game but Chelsea should have too much.”

Spurs will host north London neighbours Arsenal just moments after Chelsea’s match is concluded on Sunday.

The White Hart Lane faithful will be hoping their title rivals drop points against the Toffees, who will have the Premier League’s top scorer amongst their ranks.

Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku has scored 24 goals in 33 matches as he will be hoping to dent his former side’s chances of lifting the title.

Ronald Koeman’s men have won six games on the bounce on Merseyside, scoring an impressive 22 goals during those games.

They will now have to breach the defence of a team that has not kept a clean sheet in the league since their 4-0 win against Hull in January.
