Paul Merson has backed Tottenham to return to winning ways when they host relegation battlers Hull on Wednesday night.
Spurs have lost two of their last three Premier League matches after slipping to one-goal defeats against Manchester United on Sunday and Chelsea two weekends before.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side demonstrated their calibre by chalking up convincing wins against Swansea and CSKA Moscow in between those setbacks but Sky Sports pundit and former Arsenal attacker Merson explained why Wednesday’s clash at White Hart Lane is a must-win for the hosts.
“If you look at the games that the rest of the top six have in midweek, then Tottenham need to win,” said Merson on the Sky Sports website. “They have the easiest game out of everybody and I think they will get the three points.
“They were OK against United, just OK. At times they got into positions where they should have been better. They have to win these games to stay around the top four.”
Merson predicted Tottenham to overcome the visitors by a scoreline of 3-0.
Spurs are fifth in the table heading into Wednesday’s fixture and can climb to fourth if the win and Manchester City lose.
Pochettino’s outfit were the division’s only unbeaten team until their 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, but they have a strong record against sides in the bottom half of the table.
By contrast, Hull are locked in a relegation battle and above only bottom club Sunderland after taking just 12 points from their 15 matches this season.
