Paul Merson: This is the only hope I can give Tottenham in Premier League title race

By Amir Mir

Paul Merson believes the only hope he can give Tottenham in the Premier League title race is that they can close the gap on leaders Chelsea “in the next couple of games”.

Sky Sports pundit Merson also feels Spurs have the chance to “put pressure” on Antonio Conte’s side ahead of the weekend fixtures.

Mauricio Pochettino will welcome Watford to White Hart Lane for the early kick off on Saturday afternoon with Chelsea travelling to Bournemouth later on in the day.

This will give the north London club the opportunity to cut their rivals lead in the table to four points if they can claim a win against the Hornets.

This was Merson’s response when asked what hope he can give to Spurs as the title race could go to the wire.

“I think they will close the gap in the next couple of games and then the run-in will be decisive,” Merson told the Fantasy Football Club which aired on Sky Sports 1 on Friday evening.

“Tottenham have got a difficult run-in, but they play early this weekend, which can put pressure on Chelsea.

“Then Chelsea go to Old Trafford, but the run-in is kinder to Chelsea.”

After their game on Saturday, Tottenham will play three more Premier League matches in April, including an FA Cup semi-final showdown against Chelsea.

Eddie Howe’s Bournemouth, relegation-threatened Crystal Palace and north London rivals Arsenal will be the teams awaiting them this month.

They will be followed by a trip to West Ham, their final home match at White Hart Lane against Manchester United before rounding off the season with a trip to Hull City.

By contrast, Chelsea travel to Old Trafford, host Southampton and take on Everton at Goodison Park at the end of this month.

Furthermore, the trio of Middlesbrough, West Brom and Sunderland await them for the final three matches of the campaign in May.
