Paul Pogba cited by pundit after Man City exit update via BBC - 'it's laughable'

Man City have to cash in on Raheem Sterling this summer if he is unwilling to sign a new contract, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Premier League champions should learn from the mistakes made by Man United with Paul Pogba.

According to the BBC‘s Simon Stone (22 June), Chelsea and teams in Spain are keen to sign Sterling this summer.

The England international will enter the final 12 months of his deal at the Etihad next week.

According to Di Marzio (19 June), Chelsea are confident of signing the winger for a cut-price fee of £35million because of his contract situation.

Robinson pointed to Pogba and Romelu Lukaku when explaining why City should cash in on their winger in this window.

“I don’t like player going into the last 12 months of their contract,” he told Football Insider.

“Look at what Paul Pogba has cost Man United. Look at how much Lukaku cost Chelsea. Both clubs have lost tens of millions on those two players. It is laughable.

“City cannot risk that with Sterling. If he has told City that he won’t sign a new contract it is time to cash in.

“Yes, Man City don’t need the money but you don’t want a player in your dressing room who doesn’t want to be there. It is in the best interest of the club and the player that he moves on. There has to be an agreement reached. They need to find a solution.

“They should put a price on his head and let him go.

“Of course, they won’t want to sell him to a title rival but that’s better than having an unhappy player on the sidelines on huge wages. It makes no sense keeping him.”
