Max Aarons is the “perfect right-back” and would be a big upgrade on Matt Doherty and Serge Aurier for Tottenham.
That is the view of ex-England and Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the prospect of Spurs signing the 21-year-old.
Football Insider revealed Tottenham have approached Norwich to register their interest in the defender ahead of the summer window.
Aarons has a “gentleman’s agreement” with the newly-crowned Championship title winners that he can leave at the end of the season and £30million would seal the deal.
Spurs’ current right-back options Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty have both struggled to impress this season.
Doherty, a summer 2020 signing from Wolves, has been injured in recent weeks but has still only managed 12 Premier League starts.
Asked whether Aarons would be a big upgrade on the pair, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent, he’s just got that speed.
“I’ve been disappointed that Doherty hasn’t played so much but I do think Doherty’s more of a wing-back than a right-back. He’s not the best at defending, he’s better going forward.
“If you had a super-strong right-sided centre-back of a three then you could let Doherty fly forward but Spurs haven’t got that.
“For me, Max Aarons is the perfect right-back. Up and down. He can defend, he’s quick.
“I’m sure that’s one Spurs will be hoping to get over the line.”
Aarons has played 129 games across all competitions for Norwich, including 36 Premier League appearances last season when they were relegated.
The England Under-21 international has scored five goals and provided 12 assists in his time at Carrow Road.
