Celtic have been tipped to re-sign Patrick Roberts in January – and he could be the perfect mid-winter capture.
That is the view of former Aberdeen and Leeds United striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the prospect of the 23-year-old returning to Parkhead next month.
According to the Daily Record, the club are keen to add a new winger to the squad in January and have been alerted to the availability of former fans’ favourite Roberts.
The winger has started just three Championship fixtures this season and has reportedly been told he can leave the club in search of regular first team football.
“When you go to a club on loan, sometimes it does not work out,” Whelan told Football Insider.
“Celtic will not be scared to go back in and give him a shot. We know that Roberts is a quality player and we also Neil Lennon is in desperate need of a winger in January. Roberts may just fit the bill for Celtic in January.
“Can they make it happen? It looks like he is surplus to requirements at Middlesbrough so he will likely be available.
“His arrival could boost the confidence of the dressing room. He is a player who can add competition, especially if he can find the form he produced last time for them.”
Roberts’ 78 appearances for the Hoops between 2016 and 2018 yielded an impressive 18 goals and 26 assists.
