Everton and Carlo Ancelotti will be “buzzing” at the news Lucas Digne is set to return from injury before the end of January.
That is the view of former Aston Villa and England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Ancelotti delivered an update on the left back’s fitness.
The Italian revealed to the official Everton website after their Boxing Day win over Sheffield United that Digne will return to action before the end of next month after recovering quicker than expected.
He added: “He is starting individual sessions and we are really surprised about [the speed of] his recovery.”
Digne has been out of action since suffering an ankle injury in the Toffees’ 3-2 win over Fulham in November.
The 34-time France international has been replaced by summer signing Ben Godfrey at left-back.
The 22-year-old is a natural centre-back and while Agbonlahor has admired how Godfrey has adapted, he insists it will be better to have a “natural” on the left-side of defence.
He told Football Insider: “He’s a natural left-back which is good.
“But for me, Everton have been doing so well with so many injuries so to get him back will be perfect and give them a boost.
“It will be a good thing for Godfrey to get a rest because he’s been playing a lot of football.
“You can’t beat a left-footed left-back, so yes, I’m sure they’ll be buzzing to get him back.”
Digne had missed just one Premier League game for Everton before picking up his injury that eventually required surgery.
Since his move to Goodison Park from Barcelona in 2018, he has provided 17 assists and scored five goals in 87 games across all competitions.
