Philippe Clement 'one defeat away from Rangers sack'

Philippe Clement is one defeat away from being sacked as the Rangers manager after a turbulent start to the season at Ibrox.

This is according to former Man United chief scout Mick Brown, who also spent a period as Sir Alex Ferguson's number two, as he exclusively told Football Insider that it is not enough for the boss just to pick up wins - he needs to win convincingly.

This comes following a 2-1 win against St Mirren in which Clement's side struggled to take control of the game and were forced to fight to take all three points.

Rangers are currently in third place in the Scottish Premiership, six points behind both Aberdeen and Celtic who are yet to lose a game so far.

This, paired with a number of underwhelming performances on the pitch, has led to increased pressure on the manager's position from the crowd and board at Ibrox.

Former Aberdeen CEO Keith Wyness previously told Football Insider that a defeat to Aberdeen on 30 October would make Clement's position "untenable".

With pressure continuing to grow on the boss, Brown has insisted that, regardless of the number of wins they pick up, pressure will mount until they can challenge for the title.

Brown told Football Insider on 23 October that any potential payout in Clement's contract would not be a hindrance if they decide to pull the trigger.

Now, the expert who remains very well-connected within the game and also spent time at Sunderland and Tottenham, insisted that it will only take one defeat for the pressure to grow again.

"One defeat will put him under pressure again and he could be sacked," he told Football Insider.

"Just winning games isn't enough for them, they need to win convincingly and in style.

"The expectation is that they will always challenge for the title.

"Second-best isn't good enough - or even third-best this season with Aberdeen showing up.

"As soon as they lose a game, they lose ground to the teams above them.

"That's something they can't afford even at this stage of the season, so the manager is always one defeat away from the threat of being sacked.

"Regardless of how many wins he picks up, the pressure at that club is to always be challenging for titles, and they don't look anywhere near good enough to do that this season."
