Phillips backs Sunderland to sign Wyke-like striker after journalist's claim
Kevin Phillips has backed a potential Sunderland swoop for Stoke City striker Sam Vokes.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, drew comparisons between Vokes and Charlie Wyke.
On Wednesday (30th June) Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop claimed Sunderland are interested in a loan deal for Vokes.
On 16th June, Football Insider revealed the striker has been given the green light to leave Stoke with a year left on his contract.
Vokes, 31, made 30 Championship appearances last season but failed to score.
He was mainly used as a substitute and only started five league games for the Potters.

Phillips claims Vokes is similar to Charlie Wyke and admitted he could be a good signing for Sunderland.
“It didn’t go to plan for him at Stoke,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“He came in not long after I left. Vokes is that type of player, you know what you’re going to get.
“He is in that Charlie Wyke ilk. He’s big and powerful in the box and gets on the end of crosses.
“That’s not a bad one to be fair. You would like to think he can perform in League One.
“He could suit Sunderland’s style of play, that could turn out to be a decent signing.”
Wyke is now officially a free agent after failing to agree new terms with the Black Cats.
He could still re-sign for the club but Football Insider revealed earlier this month (16th June) the 28-year-old is “very keen” on a move to Celtic.
