Kevin Phillips has tipped Dwight Gayle to sign a new contract at Newcastle United this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former England international said the 30-year-old will be offered a “massive increase in wages” if he commits his long-term future to the club.
Gayle has little over six months left on his current deal at St. James’ Park and could leave on a free transfer next summer.
Football Insider understands that club chiefs are set to block the striker from leaving in the January window as they look to tie him down to a new contract in 2021.
The English forward has featured in the Magpies last three fixtures, scoring a match-winning header against his former club West Brom last week.
When asked Football Insider for his assessment of Gayle’s future on Tyneside, Phillips said: “It is a very tough one for Dwight Gayle.
“If he signs a new deal he knows he will be getting a massive increase in wages and he also seems quite comfortable there. He has lived in the north-east for a while.
“If I was in Dwight’s shoes though and I was not playing regularly, I would want to get out and play. I would want to play week in, week out.
“In my opinion, he will sign a new deal at Newcastle but I would rather see him go and play regularly somewhere.
“He has a lot to offer and we saw that with his header against West Brom.”
