Phillips: 'Brilliant' Embleton news will help Sunderland secure promotion
Kevin Phillips has claimed Elliot Embleton’s experience with Blackpool last term will be “crucial” as Sunderland push for promotion this year.
The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 22-year-old’s knowledge after his play-off triumph with the Tangerines last season will be “important”.
The midfielder signed a new deal with Sunderland yesterday (October 13th), committing his future to the club until 2025.
Black Cats boss Lee Johnson shared his delight at Embleton’s renewal, claiming the two-footed star has “a lot of potential”.
The Academy of Light graduate has starred for promotion-chasing Sunderland so far this term, notching two goals and three assists.
He spent the second half of last season on loan with Blackpool, registering an assist in the League One play-off final as the Lancashire side sealed promotion to the second tier.

Phillips insisted Embleton’s Wembley triumph will be “crucial” in quelling the fears of fellow youngsters should Sunderland look to repeat the Tangerines’ success this season.
“His experience in getting promoted will be crucial,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“I was at the play-off final last season, and he was brilliant for Blackpool – he’s got that experience under his belt.
“That can only be a good thing when you have young players in your squad. Of course, they’ve got some experience which will also help.
“Being able to speak to Embleton as a young player and get some advice about how to deal with the pressure as they get to the back end of the season will be vitally important.
“Not just him, but Lee Johnson as well.
“It’s crucial that he’s signed a new deal and let’s just hope that he can stay fit.”
