Kevin Phillips has claimed Chris Hughton would be a “great fit” at Bristol City as Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is linked with the vacant post.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England striker insisted Hughton, 61, ticks all the boxes for the billionaire-owned Championship club.
This comes after Football Insider revealed the former Brighton, Norwich City, Birmingham City and Newcastle United manager is the favourite to take over at Ashton Gate.
Hughton has told friends he expects to be appointed the new City manager this summer after holding recent talks.
“Chris Hughton is a fantastic manager,” Phillips told Football Insider. “We all know what he is about, with his experience and proven record of getting teams promoted.
“I think he would be a great fit at Bristol City.”
News of Hughton’s potential appointment will be a big relief to Rangers fans after an Express report stated the Championship club’s billionaire owner Steve Lansdown is eager to lure Gerrard from Glasgow.
City are searching for a new manager after sacking Lee Johnson two weekends ago.
Lansdown has seen his side’s promotion hopes disappear either side of the lockdown.
He is now looking to appoint City’s first manager for four-and-a-half years.
In other Rangers news, Ross Wilson is working on a new senior signing after a massive development.
