Phillips 'disappointed' by injury after Leeds update from Thorp Arch - Whelan

Noel Whelan has suggested Leeds United could be boosted by Kalvin Phillips being forced to miss England duty through injury.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker claimed the 25-year-old could do with a rest after his exploits for club and country in recent months.

Football Insider revealed on Thursday (7th October) Phillips is hopeful of returning to full training to be available for the next Premier League game against Southampton after being assessed at Thorp Arch.

Leeds confirmed on Tuesday (5th October) the midfielder had withdrawn from the England squad after picking up a calf strain.

Whelan admitted missing out on playing for England would be disappointing for Phillips.

However, he suggested there could be a silver lining for Leeds.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “You’re hoping that when your players go on international duty, everyone’s gonna get through it unscathed.

“This seems to me more of a precaution than anything too serious. You’ve got to commend the national side and Gareth Southgate for not pushing the player.

“Just giving him that rest and time that he needs for his club as well. That’s the way it should work between two parties, domestic football and international.

“You’ve got a good relationship with managers where you don’t push a player, you do the right thing. That trust is there between the both of them.

“It’s disappointing for personal reasons for Kalvin, I’m sure he’d like to get another two caps underneath his belt.

“At the same time, the longevity of this season and him being fit is more crucial to both Leeds United and England.

“This is why these things have probably cropped up, a little strain in his calf. With the amount of football that he has played, the intensity of coming out of last season.

“Internationally, into the final of the Euros then pretty much straight back into the season, there’s not much respite there for the players.

“This might be a good two weeks for him just to get his body recovered and rested. Just give him that opportunity to heal and what he needs to go back into a busy section of the season.”
