Phillips excited by 'huge' Liverpool development behind the scenes this week
Liverpool are “following in the footsteps” of Manchester City with their “incredible” Anfield redevelopment, according to Kevin Phillips.
The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, praised the Reds for moving sensibly to increase the capacity.
Liverpool confirmed via club media on Wednesday (14 December) that steelwork has been installed as part of plans to revamp the Anfield Road Stand – with work originally starting in September.
The redevelopment is pencilled in to be completed at the end of the 2023-24 season, with 7,000 seats set to be added to the stadium’s capacity.
Phillips insisted the “huge” development will make the famous ground an even more “incredible” spectacle.
“I think it’s huge,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“They’re following in the footsteps of Man City, who obviously transformed their stadium. We’ve seen it at Old Trafford throughout the years as well.
“When these stadiums which get redeveloped – commercially, it’s not a bottomless pit so Liverpool will need to generate income, even through concerts and similar events.
“It’s a really sensible move, and if you can do it while continuing to play at the stadium then why not?
“Once it’s all finished it will be an even more incredible stadium to play football in.”
Anfield currently holds just over 54,000 spectators, making it the seventh-largest football stadium in England.
Liverpool are one point adrift of league leaders after 17 games.
