Exclusive: £57K-a-wk striker would jump at chance to join Celtic as bid launched - Phillips

Kevin Phillips has claimed Josh Maja could score “a lot of goals” in the Scottish Premiership if he completed a move to Celtic this summer.

The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, believes the 21-year-old would jump at the chance to sign for the Hoops.

As revealed by Football Insider, the Bhoys are ready to rival Rangers for the Bordeaux forward’s signature despite his hefty wages.

Maja earns £57,000-a-week in Ligue 1 having left Sunderland for the French side in January 2019.

Charlie Austin is another striker target with the player revealing this month he would be open to a move north of the border.

When asked by Football Insider if Maja would be a better option for the Hoops than Austin, Phillips said: “Josh Maja showed at Sunderland what a good player he was and took the easy option, in terms of the cash, to go where he went. Now the kid needs to come and play football.

“I think Charlie would score a lot of goals up there and that would go for Maja as well.

“Maja is a younger player with the potential of making a profit in the future. They have a track record of developing players and selling them on.

“If Maja has the chance to go to Celtic I think he would take it.”

Neil Lennon’s side are actively searching for a new striker with fears growing Odsonne Edouard could be set heading for the exit doors.

Maja would be in line with the club’s signing’s in recent years with Edouard and his predecessor Moussa Dembele both arriving at Parkhead as young strikers with experience in Ligue 1.

In other Celtic news, Paul Robinson has told Football Insider Premier League club’s asking price is “unfair” for Parkhead favourite.
