Kevin Phillips has credited Jose Mourinho and Gareth Bale for instilling a “winning mentality” into the Tottenham dressing room this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Sunderland West Brom striker insisted that the influence of Bale, 31, “cannot be underestimated”.
Spurs climbed to the top of the Premier League table after a goalless draw at Chelsea and the players reaction to the defeat on social media was both intriguing and telling.
Eric Dier voiced his ‘disappointment’ at the result on Instagram after the match along with Harry Kane, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Moussa Sissoko.
Jose Mourinho’s side face north London rivals Arsenal on Sunday as they look to extend their unbeaten league run to 10 games.
When asked by Football Insider what could be read by the squad’s reaction to the draw at Stamford Bridge, Phillips said:
“Mourinho has instilled a winning mentality in that group. 100 per cent they believe they can win the title.
“I also would not underestimate the impact of Bale in that dressing room. He will have brought that winning mentality. He is a Champions League winner who has proven it on every stage. I would not underestimate his influence on the players around him. He will help that dressing room believe that they can go to Chelsea and win.
“Whether they can or can’t win the Premier League is another matter but they believe. For me, those reactions are down to Mourinho and Bale.
“Spurs believe they can go anywhere and win. They will be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.”
