Kevin Phillips has tipped Everton to hand director of football Marcel Brands a new contract this season.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, is adamant that club chiefs will want to tie down the 58-year-old after this summer’s “huge” recruitment drive.
Brands is out of contract at Goodison Park in June 2021 having joined the Merseyside club in June 2018.
The Athletic report that Everton are “relaxed” about the Dutchman’s future with talks over a new deal expected to commence in the new year.
The Toffees’ invested heavily this summer, Brands playing a key role in the signings of James Rodriguez, Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ben Godfrey, Robin Olsen and Niels Nkounkou.
When asked by Football Insider if he expected the club to offer Brands a new contract, Phillips said: “I think the club will be keen for him to stay.
“The recruitment has been huge at Everton.
“It is so important in football and it can make or break a manager. I remember when Steve Walsh left Leicester for Everton after he recruited Mahrez and it just did not work out for Walshy there even though he did an amazing job at Leicester.
“If you get the right recruitment policy – identify the right players, people that can sell the club to players and work closely with the manager it is massive.
“He looks as if he is doing that so you would want to tie him down for sure.”
