Phillips hails 'excellent signing' as he reveals why he's a 'big fan' of Sunderland star Stewart
Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on “brilliant” Sunderland striker Ross Stewart ahead of the visit of Charlton Athletic.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend compared the 25-year-old to his former strike partner Niall Quinn for his style of play.
Stewart scored his eighth and ninth goal of the season in the 4-0 demolition of Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday night.
According to WhoScored, the centre-forward won six aerial duels over the course of the 90 minutes – two more than any other player on the pitch.
The Black Cats welcome League One strugglers Charlton to the Stadium of Light on Saturday and Stewart is expected to start.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of the striker, Phillips said: “Stewart is better than Charlie Wyke.

“He reminds me of Quinny. Quinny was able to rise and find the player. His timing was brilliant and so is Stewart’s.
“I watched the game against Crewe and I thought Sunderland were magnificent. There was only ever going to be one winner. Defensively Crewe were terrible but that coincides with the great movement from Sunderland. They got in between the lines time and time again.
“Stewart is turning out to be an excellent signing for Sunderland. I’m a big fan. He is going to be their top scorer this season.
“Every time I watch him he impresses me. He is only going to get better and better.”
