Kevin Phillips has heaped praise on Connor Goldson as he edges closer to a new contract at Rangers.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said the 28-year-old is a player Steven Gerrard “can rely on” and is “fully deserving” of improved terms.

Goldson has played every single minute of every single game across all competitions for the Light Blues this season.

He has just over one year remaining on his current contract at Ibrox, having penned a four-year deal upon his arrival from Brighton in 2018.

Football Insider understands the centre-half has agreed in principle to sign a new long-term agreement worth in the region of £30,000-a-week.

Phillips cannot believe Goldson has played 52 games already this season.

“Wow, it is incredible how many games he has played this season,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He fully deserves a new deal.

“To have not picked up any knocks or strains is just remarkable. I can’t quite believe it. Steven Gerrard will be absolutely delighted with him.

“You have to reward players like that. Goldson has been a stalwart in that season and integral to them winning the league.

“Gerrard can rely on him and that is great as a manager. You want players who are consistently available and who put top performances in.

“He certainly warrants a new contract, without a shadow of a doubt.”
