Phillips hails Newcastle 'great signing' amid reported swoop for next Shearer

Kevin Phillips has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin would immediately be compared to Alan Shearer if he moved to Newcastle United.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Premier League striker is adamant Calvert-Lewin, 24, could handle the weight of expectation at St. James’ Park.

According to The Telegraph‘s Mike McGrath (October 20th), Newcastle have set their sights on Everton’s talisman under new ownership.

The Magpies’ recruitment team are said to hold the England international in high regard.

Calvert-Lewin, who is currently sidelined through injury, is under contract at Goodison Park until the summer of 2025.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the potential transfer, Phillips said: “Calvert-Lewin is a big powerful striker and I’m sure he’d be compared to the Alan Shearer if he went there.

“He would have to go some to be half as good as Shearer though. That is the toughest part about playing up front for Newcastle. You get compared to Shearer straight away. You have to get over that.

“Young players don’t worry about that kind of pressure these days though. I think Calvert-Lewin would take it on his shoulders.

“He has shown at Everton and England that he is improving all of the time. He is a striker who has a bit of everything.

“I think Newcastle could get a good six or seven years out of him. It would be a good investment. He could turn out to be a great signing for them.”
