Phillips: 'I know Wood well' and West Ham are plotting a 'great' signing

Kevin Phillips is adamant Burnley striker Chris Wood would be a “great” signing for West Ham this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner said the 29-year-old is “a real handful” and would be an “upgrade” on club-record signing Sebastien Haller.

As revealed by this site on 4 June, the Hammers have joined Aston Villa and Everton in the race to sign the New Zealand international.

It is understood that Burnley will demand at least £30million for their star striker who has two years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor.

Wood reached double figures in the Premier League for the fourth consecutive season in the 2020-21 campaign, with 12 strikes to his name in 33 appearances.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on the Hammers’ pursuit of Wood and if he scares defenders, Phillips said: “Yes, he does. I think he would be an upgrade on Haller.

“Chris Wood is a real handful and he consistently scores goals.

“I know him well because he was a player I coached at Leicester. He has developed into a real old fashioned, tough centre-forward. You ask any defender, they do not like playing against him.

“With the creativity West Ham have from wide areas I think he would score goals. He can create his own goals as well.

“If David Moyes can secure his services for two or three seasons I think that would be great bit of business, to be honest.”
