Kevin Phillips has questioned whether Sadio Mane has “had his head turned” as the “devastating” forward continues to struggle in a Liverpool shirt.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Sunderland and England striker said the 29-year-old’s form will be “worrying” for Jurgen Klopp who will “certainly not want it to carry into next season”.
Mane dropped to the bench on Saturday, as the Reds maintained pace in the race for the top-four with a 2-1 in over Aston Villa.
The Senegal international has not scored in his last nine Premier League outings, with only one of his seven league goals this season coming in 2021.
As quoted by the Guardian, Klopp revealed the winger is concerned about his lack of goals.
When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of Mane’s recent form, Phillips said:
“Last season, for me, he was the best player in that front three. He was devastating at times.
“I think he is an unbelievable player but he is going through a difficult period.
“It is not just him though, Firmino has struggled as well. Salah is the only one that has performed.
“It is worrying for Klopp. Has Mane had his head turned? It is just one of those seasons? When a player has a dip like this you start to ask questions.
“It looks like at times he could push himself a little bit harder. His form is concerning and they will certainly not want it to carry on into next season.
“I really hope he starts performing because for me, he is a world-class player.”
