Phillips: Leeds backed to unleash their Soucek 'secret weapon' v Wolves

Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds United to unleash their ‘secret weapon’ in Pascal Struijk ahead of the trip to Wolves.

The former Sunderland and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the 21-year-old’s aerial ability gives Marcelo Bielsa’s side another dimension going forward.

Struijk scored his first goal for the Whites with a thumping header in Sunday’s 4-2 loss at Arsenal.

The centre-half has been an integral figure for Leeds since the turn of the year – he has started all nine of the club’s Premier League fixtures since losing to Manchester United in mid-December.

Phillips compared Struijk to West Ham’s top scorer Tomas Soucek for his aerial ability.

“It was a superb header at the weekend from Struijk, he has shown that he has that ability in his locker,” he told Football Insider.

“Why would you not look to use that as a weapon?

“Leeds could mix up their play. You know exactly what they are going to do. They will try and play through you and put your under pressure but what Struijk gives you is another dimension.

“You can actually play for set-pieces and then look to get the ball in the box. Soucek is the classic example of this. West Ham apply it so well. He is excellent in the air from set plays.

“Struijk could be their secret weapon moving forward until the end of the season. They should definitely look to use him a little bit more.”

Soucek has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season, with his 27 appearances in all competitions yielding eight goals.

No player in Europe’s top five leagues has won more aerial duels than the West Ham midfielder this season (261). (Wyscout)
