Phillips makes bold prediction about Arsenal new boy Ramsdale after what he's seen

Kevin Phillips insists Aarons Ramsdale can handle the pressure of playing for Arsenal after signing for the club.

The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the Gunners announced another high-profile signing.

Arsenal announced the signing of Ramsdale on 20 August as he joined from Sheffield United.

It is understood the deal is worth £24million rising to £30m with add-ons.

He will now challenge Bernd Leno for the number one spot at The Emirates.

The 23-year-old follows Martin Odegaard, 22, and Ben White, 23, through the door as Mikel Arteta sets about revamping his side.

Phillips is certain the pressure of playing for a massive club won’t be too much for Ramsdale after his experiences with England.

“Ben White has come through the door, followed by Ramsdale and Odegaard, that’s the new profile,” Phillips told Football Insider‘s Ben Wild.

“You worry about the expectation and the pressure, that’s natural with such young players.

“Can Ramsdale handle it? I think he can. From what I’ve seen I don’t think it will be a problem.

“He’s been in the England squad and worked with top players in that environment.

“It’s a really good signing and I’m sure he can’t wait to get started. He can be big for Arsenal.

“The Arsenal fans need to get behind him because it is still tough to come into such a big club.”

Last season’s form saw Ramsdale on the periphery of the England squad for this summer’s European Championships.

He was called up to the 33-man provisional squad after Dean Henderson withdrew with an injury, however, he did not make Gareth Southgate’s final squad.
