Ryan Kent has dropped a big hint he may be preparing for a blockbuster Rangers exit to Leeds United or another top club after changing his agents, according to Kevin Phillips.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former England striker claimed “there is no smoke without fire” as he explained why the Ibrox winger is likely to have one eye on a big-money move.
Football Insider revealed earlier this week that Kent’s contract talks with Rangers have been complicated by him changing his agents, with his family now taking over his representation.
It comes at a time when the high-flying Glasgow giants are keen to tie the 24-year-old, who has had an outstanding start to the season, down to a new and improved deal.
Asked by Football Insider if Kent’s change of agents suggests that he is eyeing a potential transfer from Rangers, Phillips said:
“Definitely. We have seen it with players swapping agents before. There is a reason when a player swaps an agent.
“I am still with the same agent I was when I first started the game so the only reason you would swap agents is if you are not happy with them.
“If they are not doing what you ask them to do which could potentially be that he wanted to move in the summer.
“I am only second-guessing but there is never smoke without fire. There is always a reason a player changes agent so it would not surprise me if something was to materialise in the January window at Leeds or somewhere else.
“It will be interesting to see how that one unfolds.”
Football Insider exclusively revealed in September that Kent has a £20million release clause in his contract.
That opened the door to a new bid from Leeds after they had an earlier £10m offer knocked back for Kent at a time when he was keen to remain in Glasgow.
