Phillips predicts Sunderland signing arriving this week after transfer twist

Kevin Phillips has been left baffled by Sunderland after they pulled out of a move for Liverpool left-back Tony Gallacher.

The Black Cats legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the club is in no position to be turning away players.

On 29th July, The Daily Mail reported Sunderland had pulled out of a move for Gallacher, 22.

A reason has not yet been given for the Black Cat’s surprise move.

Nor has another player been signed instead of Gallacher.

Phillips claims Sunderland must have another player lined up as cancelling a deal so late on is not a good look for the club.

“I’m very interested to find out what happened,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“There must have been a major issue if they decided to pull out that late.

“You don’t want to bring a player in if he’s not going to be quite right, that’s happened before.

“It’s a huge season for Sunderland, yet again, they need promotion.

“They aren’t the only club that need bodies and they have to get their plans right.

“Pulling out of deals just before the season starts is a blow, Johnson will want to know his starting 11 at this point.

“They will have backup players and I expect they will be brought in before the season starts.

“It’s a real bad look for Sunderland.”

Sunderland’s season gets underway next weekend with a home clash against Wigan Athletic.

The Black Cats are looking to get promoted from League One at the fourth attempt.
