Kevin Phillips has tipped Jordan Jones to explode in the business end of the season for Sunderland.
The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, heaped praise on the 26-year-old for his “amazing” performance in the win at Portsmouth.
Jones scored one and assisted one on Tuesday night, as Lee Johnson’s side boosted their hopes of finishing in the automatic promotion spots with a 2-0 win at Fratton Park.
The winger grabbed his second goal and his third assist in what was only his fourth start for the Black Cats since joining on loan from Rangers in January.
Football Insider understands Sunderland could sign Jones permanently in the summer if they meet Rangers’ £600,000 price tag.
Phillips tipped the winger to go from strength to strength in red and white.
“Jones is just getting better and better,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“It looks like he has adjusted to the rigours of League One and is now showing his quality on the ball. He is adapting to the style of play that Lee Johnson wants and it shows.
“He chipped in with goal the other night and it was an amazing finish. He showed some real class there.
“Jones is one of many players hitting form at the right time with a dozen or so games left. It is exciting times for him and Sunderland at the moment. He will only get better and better. He is a major threat.”
