Phillips shares big Stewart prediction after 'brilliant' Sunderland sighting

Kevin Phillips has tipped Sunderland striker Ross Stewart to score at least 20 goals this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the Stadium of Light legend heaped praise on the 25-year-old after watching him in person last Saturday.

Stewart scored a brace against Wycombe Wanderers last weekend to send the Black Cats top of League One.

The January signing has been tasked with replacing Charlie Wyke this season and he has not disappointed.

He has scored four goals in five league games and is currently the top scorer in the division.

Phillips was particularly impressed with the ex-Ross County man’s movement against Wycombe Wanderers.

“Stewart is like an old fashioned centre-forward,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“He is similar to Wyke but I’d say he actually has a bit more about him.

“It was exciting to watch him. I think he can be that 20-plus goal striker for Sunderland this season, I really do.

“I really like the positions he picks up and the areas that he gets into. He was in and amongst the defenders before he scored the header on Saturday. The movement was brilliant, as was the header. His second one was a good finish as well.

“He is playing in a team that will create opportunities. Aiden McGeady will always create opportunities so if you have a player who can finish, you are onto a winner.

“It would not surprise me if he gets 20 goals.”
