Phillips suggests real reason Wyke snubbed new Sunderland deal
Kevin Phillips was left shocked as Charlie Wyke snubbed a new Sunderland deal and signed for Wigan Athletic.
The Black Ctas legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the striker has followed the money with his latest decision.
On 7th July, Wigan confirmed Wyke had joined the club on a three-year deal.
That morning, Football Insider revealed the Latics had seen off interest from Sunderland and Celtic to land last season’s League One top scorer.
He left the Stadium of Light on a free transfer after failing to agree new terms with the club.
After joining Wigan, Wyke admitted he now feels he is in the “best place” to advance his career.

Phillips admits he respects Wyke’s decision but he remains disappointed with Sunderland’s loss.
“It’s is strange, I was very surprised by that,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs
“The contract is a lot better than what he was offered at Sunderland. I can only think that’s the reason.
“Only the player can give you the real reason but it’s a strange one, Considering the clubs he was linked with.
“I know what it’s like to play at Sunderland when the crowd’s in there, it’s surprising.
“But you have to give him the respect and wish him all the best. It’s a big loss.”
Wyke scored 26 League One goals last season but Sunderland failed to get promoted at the third time of asking.
He leaves the club with a record of 41 goals in 113 outings.
