Phillips 'surprised' Sunderland have opted to let two star men go

Kevin Phillips is surprised that Sunderland have not offered new contracts to Max Power and Josh Scowen, with the midfield duo set to leave the club this summer.

The Stadium of Light legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes the club could be making a big mistake in letting the experienced pair leave Wearside.

Sunderland recently announced on their club website that Power and Scowen, who made 52 and 50 appearances respectively last season, have not been offered fresh terms and that they will depart the club when their contracts expire on 30th June.

Phillips is particularly taken aback by the Black Cats’ decision to let 28-year-old Scowen leave.

“He’s done well so I am a little bit surprised,” he told Football Insider.

“Maybe the player has made it clear he wants to leave, you don’t know, but I’m surprised they haven’t decided to maybe offer him something because I thought he’s done well in the middle of the park.

“Power as well, he’s a leader and you need that experience in League One. I think they’ve got to go down the younger route and give youth a chance next year. They’ve got some good young players coming through, mixed with a little bit of experience.”

Sunderland are gearing up for their fourth successive season in the third-tier after losing to Lincoln City 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off semi-final.

The Black Cats enjoyed a 10-year stint in the Premier League before suffering consecutive relegations in 2017 and 2018.

In other news, Kevin Phillips says he ‘wouldn’t be surprised’ if Sunderland sacked Lee Johnson after update.
