Phillips tells Liverpool to forget Bowen and sign Smith Rowe instead after surprise Athletic update
Kevin Phillips has told Liverpool to sign Emile Smith Rowe instead of Jarrod Bowen.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the Reds’ transfer plans.
On 21st July, The Athletic claimed Liverpool have Bowen on their radar as they look to strengthen their attack.
Liverpool could lose Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri this summer, leaving Liverpool short in depth up front.
Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are also expected to be absent for part of the season as they participate in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Arsenal confirmed on Thursday (July 22nd) Smith Rowe has signed new terms at the Emirates Stadium.

Phillips claims Liverpool should target Smith Rowe instead of Bowen despite the player’s new deal.
“He [Bowen] could be a good player for them,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“It’s whether he will go there and play regularly for them. It could another Shaqiri situation.
“I don’t want to see that. Bowen is thriving at West Ham, he’s found a team where he can play regularly.
“If Liverpool want to sign a player like that, why don’t they go for someone like Emile Smith Rowe?
“He could be a very decent signing because I can’t see West Ham letting Bowen go.
“It’s clear Liverpool are looking for that kind of player but I don’t see it happening.”
As revealed by Football Insider (July 6th), Smith Rowe was the subject of at least two bids from Aston Villa this summer.
On 21st February, Man City boss Pep Guardiola was quoted by The Express as calling Smith-Rowe “incredible”.
