Phillips tells Radrizzani to put his money where his mouth is as Leeds plot raid to sign Johnson in January

Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani to put his money where his mouth is by backing Marcelo Bielsa in the January transfer window.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites need “a few really good signings” to climb the table in 2022.

This site exclusively revealed yesterday (November 6th) that Leeds United are plotting a move for Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson.

Speaking at the Lisbon Web Summit, as quoted by the Athletic (November 2nd), Radrizzani confirmed his “unconditional” support for Bielsa.

Leeds have struggled during their second campaign back in the Premier League after last season’s ninth-place finish.

Phillips claimed the Whites will survive relegation if they bring in some fresh faces during the winter window.

“I think it’s great to hear the chairman come out and say that, but we’ve heard it a million times before from other chairmen,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Ultimately it’s about getting results. It’s great that Bielsa has been given the backing, I think he deserves it.

“They are struggling with second season syndrome, which is always tough. The goal has to be just to stay in the Premier League this season.

“If that means they have to dip into the transfer market, then so be it.

“I thought Leeds would be challenging for Europe towards the top end of the table. But they haven’t brought in that backup striker and they’re leaking goals at the other end too.

“January will be pivotal to where they finish in the league this season. If they can get a few really good signings in like Johnson then they should be okay.

Leeds United sit 17th in the league table, just three points clear of the drop zone.

The Elland Road side completed the signings of Junior Firpo, Dan James, Jack Harrison, and Kristoffer Klaesson during the summer window.
