Kevin Phillips has tipped Lewis Ferguson to become the latest member of his family to join Rangers.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the in-demand midfielder will be excited at the prospect of moving to Ibrox.
Last week, Football Insider revealed Rangers are plotting a move for the Aberdeen 21-year-old and Ibrox sources have said they are firmly on his case.
Ibrox sources have told this site Rangers are confident Ferguson is “desperate” to join if a deal can be agreed.
Ferguson has already had a transfer request rejected following an “insulting” bid from a Premier League club.
Lewis has a strong Rangers connection as the son of Derek Ferguson and nephew of legendary midfielder Barry Ferguson.
Phillips, who played with Barry at Blackpool, claims it would be Lewis’ dream to sign for Rangers.
“I played with his dad, Barry, I know him and how passionate he was about Rangers,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“You have the chance of going to play for the Champions and where they are heading under Steven Gerrard.
“Especially when you’re playing up there and you’re Scottish and you have that relationship.
“Why would you not be excited? It’s his dream. Let’s not forget there is going to be noisy crowds and European football there next season.
“I’m sure the player would be very excited to join them if he can.”
Ferguson made 41 total appearances for the Dons this season.
He picked up 10 goals and five assists as his side finished fourth in the Scottish Premiership.
