Phillips tips Leeds to complete striker signing after confirmed news

Kevin Phillips has claimed Leeds United could “strengthen” their attacking options in January after yet another injury blow.

The former Sunderland striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the Whites desperately need to turn their fortunes around to avoid relegation from the top flight.

Speaking in a pre-match press conference yesterday (October 21st), Marcelo Bielsa confirmed Leeds United will be without Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford, Luke Ayling and Junior Firpo against Wolves this weekend.

Rodrigo has led the line in Bamford’s absence but is yet to find the net – and has recorded just 0.4 expected goals across three matches (FBref).

The 28-year-old has netted once in the Premier League this season, assisting a further two.

The England international picked up an ankle injury in September which has seen him miss matches against West Ham, Watford, and Southampton.

Phillips insisted “competition” for Bamford must be a transfer priority for Leeds United.

He also highlighted the absence of “excellent” stalwart Ayling at right-back as a “real miss”.

“It’s a blow,” Phillips told Football Insider.

“It’s been a poor start for Leeds and I didn’t see it coming, to be honest.

“Upfront is an area where they certainly need to strengthen and bring competition in, and that could happen in January.

“Defensively they have really struggled, they’re conceding lots of goals.

“Ayling, let’s not do him a disservice – he has been a real miss for them after being excellent for Leeds last season.

“They need to start winning football matches and get themselves away from the wrong end of the table.”

Mercurial winger Raphinha could return after missing the Southampton defeat.

The Whites have won just once this season and sit just three points clear of the drop zone.
