Phillips tips Rangers star to snub big-money offer as Defoe tipped to land 'good Championship club'

Kevin Phillips has predicted that Jermain Defoe will snub any advances from Ipswich Town and commit to Rangers.

The former Sunderland hero, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, has insisted that the 38-year-old is too good for the third-tier English side.

This site revealed on Wednesday that Ipswich were lining up an ambitious ‘big-money’ move for the veteran striker labelled “incredible” by manager Steven Gerrard in December 2020.

Defoe scored seven goals for the Gers during the 2020/21 campaign, helping the club to its historic 55th domestic title, but his contract expires this month.

Speaking to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, Phillips believes he is set to extend his stay with the Light Blues.

He said: “I don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble but why would you go? I don’t think Jermain would want to drop down to League One, I just don’t see it happening. It’s probably just flattering that he’s been linked to them.

“I would imagine that he could get a good Championship club if I’m being honest. If I was in charge of a Championship club now I would be making enquiries to try and get him for a season, just to try and get you out of that league, simple as that.

“No disrespect to Ipswich, I don’t see that one happening. He will probably stay at Rangers.”

Defoe moved to Glasgow on an initial 18-month loan in January 2019, before signing a pre-contract agreement the following year.

He scored the 300th goal of his career in a 2-0 win over Livingston last October.
